Red

To help celebrate National Registered Dietitian’s Day today, I am going to discuss one of my favorite colors of produce: red! Red fruits and vegetables offer a great deal of vitamins and minerals that help maintain a healthy heart, vision, immunity, and like the other colors, help reduce cancer risks. Each color offers different nutrients, which is why we encourage you to get a balanced and colorful diet, ensuring you are meeting your nutrient requirements and aiding in disease prevention. Try adding some colorful red produce to your diet!

Fruits: cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, red/pink grape fruit, red grapes, watermelon

Vegetables: beets, red onions, red peppers, red potatoes, rhubarb, tomatoes

Mexico Vacation

Well, reluctantly, we are back to South Dakota.  We had a great vacation in Mexico…first time there.  If you can’t get out of the cold here, then you can explore Mexico this way.  I am going to take you on a tour of some of the great sights, and show you some of the things we did while on vacation.   You have to  take time to relax and enjoy, but you can still find time to stay active as well.   There were lots of activities going on, which definitely helped, because I have to say, the diet kind of went of vaction also.  For short time periods, that is OK also.  You have to enjoy some of these things in life as well.  You can help balance this out a little bit by continuing to stay active and exercise.  We took walks on the beach, ran outside, worked out in the fitness center they had, went snorkeling several times, and took tours of the sights that invovled a lot of walking as well.  Of course, we had plenty of R & R as well.  Stay tuned for a tour of Riviera Maya in Mexico!

Whole Grains

Whole grains are a very important part of the heart healthy diet. They offer a great source of fiber to promote heart health. To ensure you are getting a true whole grain product, you will want to check the ingredient list under your nutrition label. The first ingredient should say “whole wheat” or “whole grain.” If it says “enriched” it is still a white product. Product packaging can make this part of grocery shopping really confusing so make sure you allow yourself adequate time in the grocery store for label reading and to ensure you are getting healthy products. Remember to choose whole grain breads, brown rice, wild rice, whole wheat noodles, and whole grain cereals over the white products. If you’re unsure of the full transition to wheat products, try mixing the white and wheat products together…such as when you make spaghetti!

5 a Day

Do you get your 5 a day? I am referring to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, which is a very essential part to a healthy diet! A higher consumption of fruits and vegetables not only aids in heart disease prevention, but it also helps promote a healthy weight, prevention of diseases such as diabetes, and gastrointestinal health.

Fresh and frozen varieties offer more nutrients compared to canned or juice products due to the processing. In addition, it’s very important to get a variety of colors!

Did you know that only 17% of South Dakotans are actually getting their “5 a day”!?!  WOW! So next time you get the itch for a snack, grab an apple or orange…and double your serving of vegetables at your dinner to get you closer to that “5 a day.”
