I was recently asked about the use and benefit of energy drinks during exercise and I thought this would be a great topic to share on our blog as well! Usually the quick rule of thumb is that water is best for low to moderate intensity workouts that last one hour or less. If your workouts are more moderate to high intensity and last more than an hour, then a sports drink may be a good choice. If you are working out in a hot environment and you usually sweat alot, then you will need additional fluids. The sports drinks help replenish our electrolytes that are lost during high intensity, longer workouts, however they do have sugars which is why they are not really necessary for lighter-moderate workouts. There are now lower sugar options such as Gatorade’s G2, which is a nice alternative to the higher sugar content in the regular product. Another helpful tip is to be sure to get adequate hydration before and after your workouts to keep your body’s fluids more balanced.

We hope you all had a very nice Christmas! I enjoyed my week off by spending it with family, relaxing, and doing some cooking and baking. Holidays are always such a fun time of the year! I included a picture of one of my favorite goodies I made: peanut butter kiss cookies. I unfortunately got the flu earlier in the week along with half of my family, which made it easier for us to not over-indulge with all these goodies.
As we look to the New Year this weekend, we are reminded of resolutions. Some people set resolutions to get back on track with life or their goals, but often times they are short lived. One of our main goals with STRIVE2Survive is to encourage LIFELONG wellness, not just a quick fix! Our winter STRIVE2Survive session will be starting next Tuesday, January 3rd. We meet 6 out of the 12 weeks (see calendar under the info tab for dates) and the other 6 weeks you get a take home lesson that can be mailed or emailed to you, thus each week out of the 12 weeks you will get a lesson on exercise and nutrition. Our program is really focused on achieving a healthy weight while preventing disease, thus we also incorporate body composition testing and lab work at the beginning and end of the program. If you are looking to improve your health and wellness in 2012, contact us today for more details!
You can email us at strive2survive@brownclinic.org, email us through the contact link on our blog, or call us at 884-4226.

A view of the bike trail this far into December. It was absolutely gorgeous outside today…high 40’s. I went for a walk with Sarah and Buddy, 4 miles, and then decided it was too nice to be done yet, so I went another 2 miles. I am loving this weather! There were quite a few people out today taking advantage of this spring time winter weather.

This couple was out enjoying the day as well. Take advantage of it NOW! I can’t believe it has been going this long. Don’t waste it. The snow will be coming, and we can still be outside, but it will limit what type of activities we can do, and where. The bike trail won’t be this readily usable. Hope everybody had a good weekend. Get ready for the upcoming holidays…a time to spend with your family.
