Throughout our STRIVE 2 Survive wellness program and many of our blog posts, you will find us discussing the importance of having a support system -aka- ‘a buddy’! Dr. Dan’s dog’s name is Buddy…and is literally his running and biking buddy. I rely on my family and close friends to keep me motivated to stay on track with my wellness goals. Your buddy could be your pet, spouse, friend, co-worker, sister/brother, etc. Whoever it is, ask for their support in your wellness efforts! Those that have a support system are often times more successful with their goals.

Tomorrow’s STRIVE 2 Survive lecture given by Dr. Clark Likness will be focusing on the wellness wheel and how the different parts of our lives contribute to overall wellness. It’s a great topic as many other factors contribute to our weight issues and overall health. Sarah and I get to take off on Saturday on a vacation to Mexico…first time for us. Time for a break from the snow and cold…Now that is what I need to help increase the motivation. I will take lots of pictures of the scenery there to share when we get back. Lots of food and relaxation, but we also still exercise everyday. It would not be very difficult to let everything slip on vacation, and then come back with an extra 5-10#. This way we can still eat and enjoy things, yet still keep our health in check. Looking forward to a week with my best friend! If I am able to send text messages, I will attempt to twitter the Mexico happenings!

Red wine has gotten a lot of “buzz” in the news and media in the last several years regarding it’s link to prevention of heart disease. The main components of red wine that have been shown to be beneficial to us are the flavonoids and antioxidants which come from the red grape. According to the American Heart Association, there have not been any direct comparison studies to determine the specific effect of wine on the development of heart disease. The linkage in these studies may have also been due to other lifestyle factors such as increased activity and a diet low in saturated fats.
Overall, we know that red wine offers more heart healthy benefits than other varieties, however more studies need to be done to determine the exact relationship between red wine and heart health. As always, moderation is key. It is recommended that females have no more than 1 drink a day and males, no more than 2 drinks a day (a drink is one 12 oz. beer, 4 oz. of wine, 1.5 oz. of 80-proof spirits, or 1 oz. of 100-proof spirits).

When we’re looking at heart healthy nutrition, eggs often come up in converstation. They seem to have gotten a bad reputation in the last few years as being bad for you and your heart due to the cholesterol found in the yolk. The yolk does have quite a bit of cholesterol, however the egg itself is an excellent source of protein (including several essential proteins) and unsaturated (healthy) fats. If you have heart disease or high cholesterol, it’s recommended to keep your intake to 3-5 eggs/week while still aiming to reduce your saturated and trans fat intake. If you like eggs and want them more than this, try using an egg substitute (liquid eggs) or have 2 egg whites for 1 yolk.

One view from the top of Terry Peak out skiing. What a view! I am glad I had my camer on my that day. It also allowed me to take a few rest breaks and take a few minutes to really take a look at the view. You really do get a different perspective when you are at the top, and coming down different paths between the trees. Unless you see it, it makes it hard to describe the true experience. Fun day, and got to share it with Sarah, one of my brothers, and a nephew.
