Phoenix last week provided a great new venue to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Typical temps in the day were into the 70’s. At the bottom of the hotel we stayed at had a hiking trail that Phoenix developed. Here is one view of the cactus along the way. We don’t get to see too much of this in SD! At least our side of the state.

Different views along the way and what the trails were like. Here are a few more:

And this last one is a good view of the mountains around as a whole, and how the trails went on this.

It was a great late afternoon the one day to go walking on this, and the first day I went running in the AM because the conference did not start until late afternoon. My run covered 9 miles, and lots of hills. It was a very quiet, nice view to observe for a run or walk. People were also out on Mountains bikes, but with all the rocks, I still think this would have a been a lot harder. Keep moving everybody!

I went to a conference last week in Phoenix with people from the hospital, and the hotel we stayed at was built into a mountain. Now normally, I like hills, but these were Mountains. Going up and down these 3-4 times a day back and forth from the conference got a little tiring. This one started up towards my room, then turned into this one:

You keep going up and around to the left, and it goes to this one:

And then at the top of this was one of the restaurants at the hotel:

We went up there a few nights and the view overlooking Phoenix at night was quite impressive. At least at night, we took a ride up and down for this place. Of course, any time you went up, you had to come down:

The road going right by my room had an appropriate name:

Need I say more? It was great going running outside everyday, which I did. Started off in the low 50’s and got up into the 70’s. They have a trail head at the bottom of the resort for hiking trails through the mountains there. I was able to go on this for some late afternoon walks, and I will show a few of these pictures later this week. I wanted to be outside as much as possible since there was no snow here! Keep moving everybody!

I have been working out this Winter at Anytime Fitness due to the cold and ice. The staff there had a T-shirt printed out just for me after I came back from Orlando doing the Goofy Challenge. This is the front of the T-shirt.

…this is the back of the T-shirt. Total suprise, and it made my day! They just featured me with doing the Goofy Challenge on their most recent electronic newsletter, which also was quite the surprise. It is a great place to workout, and I can go whenever it is convenient for me, which I love! All of this was quite the surprise, and much appreciated. Be safe working out this Winter. Keep moving everybody.

Well, the Goofy Challenge has come and gone, but it left memories to last a lifetime. Steve and I made it. Disney 1/2 marathon saturday, followed by the Disney marathon sunday. 39.3 miles total. As they say there: “Yeah, we did 39.3 miles, because 40 is just crazy!” Over 25,000 people each day! We had to learn to pace a little smarter to try and make sure we could do it all. We were very consistent. Half marathon on saturday we completed in 2 hours 22 minutes. The first half of the marathon on sunday was 2:23, and the last half marathon was 2:22! Can’t be much more consistent!

Here we are coming through the tent after the finish line, and getting our medals. A total of 3 for the weekend. A Donald Duck medal for completing the half marathon, then here on sunday, a Mickey Mouse medal for finishing the marathon, and the coveted Goofy medal for finishing both. Needless to say, it was fun, but we are wiped! Afterwards, our legs were tightening up so bad we had to have help from our wives getting into and out of the bus to get back to the hotel.

Our families surprised us by being at the finish line! Here Steve is with his wife Carletta, son Noah, and daughter Carissa, who also ran the half marathon the day before. There son Jeff cheered from home.

Here is my family. My son Nick, daughter Megan, and my wife Sarah, who ran the half marathon saturday. My daughter Molly started back in college earlier, so she cheered from Brookings! It was a great time, great weather, and hard to describe the emotions by completing this, and being surrounded by people everywhere. It makes it easier to stay motivated to run. Keep moving everybody!

We are getting ready to head out to Orlando for the Disney half and full marathon again. Sarah will be doing the 1/2 marathon saturday, and Steve Hauck and I will be doing the Goofy Challenge: doing the 1/2 marathon on saturday, and then the full marathon on sunday! Little nervous, but fired up as well. First time for doing this. Steve and I did the full marathon last year. It was Steve’s first.

The weather should be great! It will be a little tough being this hot right away. Temps to be in the 60’s to start off, and end in the low 80’s by the finish line. A far cry from 40-50 below zero! Our goal: We are just going to finish. We are not worried about time. We will take our pictures with all of the characters along the way. Training partners sticking together! Stay moving everybody!
