New York Trip

The New York trip was definitely an eye opener!  Lots of people.  The only grass I saw was here at Central Park…full of a lot of people relaxing, walking, enjoying the day.  The one thing about where we were at, and Time Square, the easiest way to get a round was to WALK!  We did lots of walking.  Even the tour guides said that people in New York do a lot of walking, because of the traffic, crowds, this is one of the easier ways to get around…that and the subway!  Anyway, I logged miles and miles each day in the evenings out walking.  Now we have warm weather here as well…just would be nice if we did not get all of it in one day.  Have a good rest of the week.

Moderation!

As the holiday weekend approaches, I want to remind all of you of a very important word in weight management….”MODERATION”! I want to invite everyone to take time to really enjoy the importance of the 4th of July Holiday…our freedom and independence! Of course food, family, and festivities are involved in this celebration, thus I encourage you all to be mindful of your holiday eating. Enjoy those holiday treats, however practice moderation! Enjoy a smaller amount, share with your friend or family member, and make sure you get your exercise in! I included the “MyPlate” icon as a reminder of what our plate should look like. I wish you all a wonderful holiday weekend and Happy 4th of July!

Cooking Seasonings

As I was looking through my snack recipes to make up for the 4th celebrations I noticed many of them call for seasonings such as garlic salt, onion salt, etc. A quick tip for you when grocery shopping and preparing your foods that call for seasonings, the “powder” versions are going to have less sodium than the “salt” versions so if your recipe calls for garlic salt, you can easily substitute garlic powder and have less sodium added to your tasty foods! Even though I do not have high blood pressure, I still try to watch the salt in my diet as I am sure I am getting plenty as many foods are already packed full of it! The new dietary guidelines tightened up the recommendations for sodium and are now recommending those with heart disease or high blood pressure consume 1500-2400 mg of sodium a day. To put this in perspective, the average American consumes anywhere from 4000-5000 mg/day!

Holiday Cooking

As you all prepare your menu for the 4th of July festivities, I encourage you all to be health conscious and include healthy items such as fresh produce into your menu plans. Instead of the usual hotdog or brat on the grill, try making kabobs with lean meats such as chicken, pork , or shrimp along with some healthy veggies. If your holiday fun is anything like my family’s, it ends up being several days full of great food that is very tempting so planning some healthy items into your menu will save some calories and extra pounds post holiday!

Off to New York!

Getting ready to head to New York for a few days for a conference.  I have never been to New York City.  I will get my first hand look at Time Square above, and see what I can do for going out walking, running while there.  My kids have all been there for a school trip…now I get to go.  Looking forward to a new adventure.  I will take lots of pictures and give you a tour when I get back.  Have a good weekend!
