This picture above is one of my all time favorite snacks and/or a small meal. The peanut butter provides a great source of protein, the whole grain toast gives you some excellent fiber and nutrients, the banana adds some more great vitamins and minerals, and the drizzle of honey gives you a little natural sweetener. I also add a glass of skim milk to give me some calcium and vitamin D! Pairing up protein and whole grains provides satiety and helps keep your blood sugar more stable. Other examples of pairing snacks are whole grain crackers like Triscuits or Wheat Thins with a little low fat cheese or a handful of almonds and a handful of grapes or an apple. When you start balancing your meals and snacks like this, you’ll find you will be less hungry in between meals, which will prevent overeating at meal times. Give it a try!

With the Autumn season, there are a lot of color changes to be watching, at least for what is left on the trees yet. Here above, one gray cloud moved in last week at the cross country meet, with the rainbow along with it. So all the blue sky, one big cloud, with the rainbow coming to the runners. Very neat to watch that day.

Now add the rainbow in with some of the other colors of the trees changing, and it had everybody in attendance watching. So get outside yet, and enjoy the change in the season, and the colors associated with it, before all we see is a sea of white. Have a good week coming!

As I discussed before, Brown Clinic’s STRIVE 2 Survive has partnered with County Fair Foods to help you make healthier choices when grocery shopping. As I was walking through the store last night, I came across a newer product line that has gotten a lot of interest for those watching their waist lines. Waldon Farms products offer many different varieties of dressings that are calorie free, sugar free, and fat free. Wow! If you are wondering how that can be, we encourage you to take a look at the ingredients and notice the first ingredient (they’re always listed most to least in quantity) is water. These dressings may not be as thick as your regular ranch dressing, however they are a great alternative to add some flavor to your dishes without adding extra calories, sugar, and fat. I encourage you to check out these products and look for our product labels at County Fair Foods!

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought it’d be fitting to discuss the importance of a healthy diet in relation to breast cancer prevention. According to the SD Department of Health, breast cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer (besides skin cancers) and the 2nd leading cause of death in South Dakota women. Following a low fat diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in preventing breast cancer. In addition, it’s important to maintain a healthy weight, engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity and limit alcohol consumption. Breast feeding has also been linked to breast cancer prevention. Eating healthy not only impacts our weight, it truly does aid in disease prevention and longevity!
