The weather is the “talk of the shop” lately as it seems like we have had blizzard conditions every day or every other day and the temperatures are bitter cold. This undesirable weather sure makes us cranky and crabby as we wait for warmer temps and spring to come. It’s very hard to get motivated to do anything on cold and blustery days as we’d rather just curl up in a blanket in our sweatpants and watch a movie. Even though we may feel like being a bum, it’s still a good time to get a little workout in which will help raise your body temperature and give you more energy throughout the day. The activity can also produce natural endorphins boosting your mood and improving the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder.
We also typically eat more soups, stews, and hot-dishes on days like this. If you are watching your waist line, it’s important to be careful of how much you consume of these foods as they can be high in calories, fat, and carbs… depending on how you prepare them. Broth based soups and stews are lower in calories and fat than cream based. In addition, if you’re making a hot dish, you may consider cutting calories by choosing fat free soups to add to your dish, such as fat free cream of chicken or mushroom soup. They also have low sodium varieties of these so if you’re watching your blood pressure or sodium intake, you may consider using this variety. And, as always, be sure to incorporate your lean proteins and plenty of fruits and veggies to your meal. You may consider doubling the veggies in your soups to make them a bit heartier and healthy. Two of my favorite cold weather meals are my mom’s beef stew that has carrots, peas, potatoes, onion, and roast meat and her chicken noodle soup that also has plenty of veggies with white meat chicken. Nothing beats either of these on a cold winter day!
Lastly, if you are not meeting the daily recommendations for health based on MyPlate, you may consider adding a multivitamin to ensure you are meeting your nutrient needs to help you stay healthy. Be sure to choose one with Vitamin D as most of us are low in D due to the lack of sunlight we see in the winter months.
Stay warm and safe!

On a blustery day like today, I can’t help but imagine myself on a beach (like the one in my picture I enjoyed last winter in Mexico), drinking a tasty fruit drink, and soaking up the sun. Instead I am inside, with wool socks on and a warm and snuggly sweatshirt. The lack of sun, cold temps, and blizzard temperatures can really bring our spirits down. Here are some tips to help you spark your spirit and stay motivated with working on your wellness goals.
- Get active! Activity produces natural endorphins that boost mood and it will aid in a healthy heart and weight. Try getting at least 30 minutes of activity in a day…if you can do more, the better. Vary your activities to decrease the chances of boredom.
- Eat Right: healthy eating will make you feel healthier inside and out. Aim to get at least 5 fruits and veggies a day, include whole grains, lean meats, and healthy fats. Vitamin D has been proven to aid in seasonal affective disorder, so be sure to get your 3 servings of low fat milk or dairy products. If you aren’t a milk drinker you may consider taking a daily multivitamin with calcium and vitamin D or a vitamin D supplement. Please ask your dietitian, pharmacist, or doctor for the correct dosage.
- Spice up your life: Sometimes getting a new shirt, going to the movies, reading a new and exciting book, or getting new tunes on your ipod will help spice up your life and add some more excitement to your life.
- Get out! Plan a family/friend trip, bum around downtown Watertown, or plain just get out of the house! It’s easy to dwell in our sorrows by becoming a hermit and staying inside. We need to get out and get some socialization!
- Think Positive! Dwelling on the negatives can sure take a person down. Instead think about the positives in your life. Tell yourself one positive thing about yourself and your selfworth daily. Focus on the blessings in your life!
- If you feel you are suffering from the blues very seriously then I encourage you to contact your physician for further assistance as we can help you with this!
Spring and warmer temperatures will be coming. Stay positive, eat right, exercise, and get out…those winter blues will be gone before you know it!

The cold has been terrible right now to try and go outside and run. I can put up with a lot of extremes with the temperature, but when it gets this cold, with windchills -25 degrees or worse, then it becomes more an issue of safety as well. That does not mean you cannot find alternatives way to exercise.

This morning was the perfect time to ultilize my membership at Anytime Fitness. Warm environment, with plenty of equipment to use, and other people working out at the same time. This works great during the cold, but not everybody has this ability. There are different types of exercise equipment you can purchase that is very inexpensive, or that you can even create/make on your own. We teach this also in our Strive 2 Survive program. I have equipment of my own that I utilize as well.

I have built this up over the years, and it is equipment that either I, or someone in my family utilizes frequently. Even though we have this, sometimes you just need to do something different in order to keep the interest and the motivation there. When the weather is not like it is now, I will be outside. I love looking around at everything when working out. It takes your mind off what you doing, and it goes by so much faster. You can also go indoors at the mall and go walk around. You have a long enough route to be making laps. Just leave your money at home so you are not tempted to spend every time you do this! Whatever it takes, there is always a right time for fitness: Anytime! It is up to you as to how and where you want to do the exercise at. Good luck! Keep moving everybody!

This time of year, when you are limited by the weather for how much you can exercise outside, it gets kind of tough to stay motivated. The treadmill only gets you so far. Using other equipment, like an elliptical, or the bike, or weights, can help keep things interesting. This is also a good time of year to get out of the cold and snow, and go somewhere warm. Sarah and I have tried to do this for 1 week each year, to help ease the burden of winter. We got back from Mexico a week ago, and running along the beach everyday was absolutely wonderful!

There were lots of new things to look at, and we would go out 2 miles, and come back. The furthest we went along the beach in one direction was 3 1/2 miles. You can see lots of foot prints here. Quite a few people would do the same thing, and this was 6:30 in the morning, before it would get too hot. The ocean waves rolling in, the birds flying, the other flowers, green areas to look were great. We hardly felt like we were running. We would run in the AM, and go for a long walk later in the afternoon. We did not want to miss any ocean time!

What a great way to start each day! There was alwasy something different to look at each day. The sound of the ocean was amazing. This was the easiest it has been in a while to get up and go for a run! I took many different pictures, and I will show over the next few posts different things we would get to see first hand by running, or going for a walk, along the beach. Fun! Keep moving everybody!

When I got up this morning and looked outside, I knew I was not going to be able to run outside. Out here, there was already about 7 inches in the driveway. So I did go out and blow snow, and some shoveling, but was kind of dreading having to do a long run on the treadmill. Some days, no problem, but other days, it can be a chore trying to fire up to do this on a treadmill. I had just gotten back last night from a conference in the Black Hills, and ran hills out there. Well, not really hills, more like Mountains! I was still sore, and the thought of trying to knock off 12 miles on the treadmill was not my idea of a really good time. So I decided to bike instead. At the pace I set, I rode 36 miles on the bike, which when converted over based on the speed, was equal to just over 12 miles.

By doing the biking, it allowed my legs a little more recovery time from doing the hill workouts in Deadwood. Sometimes, you just need to listen to your body, and make adjustments. Next time, it probably won’t be an issue to be on the treadmill, but the outside option for me will always be first. Running outside is just so much more enjoyable, and you can look around, and the time goes by so much faster. Just remember, you can come up with an alternative way to exercise before saying you are not going to do anything that day. Be creative. Some people I know, Jill and Steve, ran their 11 mile run outside this AM. More power to them! In South Dakota, if we let the weather dictate whether we will exercise at all, whether inside or outside, we would not get much done. Stay positive! Keep moving everybody!
