Taking the Time to Think

Taking time to relax

Life is busy.  This never changes.  The weather is starting to get cooler, and you can tell we are in the Autumn season.  When everything is changing color, it is easy to get lost in amazement going outside.  Take advantage of these changes.  Time to commit yourself to change.  Go out walking, biking, whatever.  Go out and sit and watch, and take time to think!  Before too long we will be stuck inside, just looking out at snow.  Go out by the bike trail, pull up a chair by the lake, and just take it in.  It is amazing how your mind just takes off, and you can think, relax, figure out things in your life.  Soak it up.  Everybody needs this time to reflect, and slow down from a fast paced life.

When you take some time to explore, you never know where that path is going to take you.  When I am out running, biking, or walking, it is a great time for me to stay healthy, but it is my time to relax, think, and reflect on things for the day.  I especially like it early in the morning, and it is quiet, before everybody else is out and about.  I can plan for the day.  Think about what lies ahead, and what I may do under certain situations.  It is relaxing, yet I am working out.  Once you get in the habit of this, you will know exactly what I am talking about. Get out and enjoy the changes of the season, and let your mind go!.  Keep moving everybody!

What a Great Weekend to be Outside!

Spent a good portion of this weekend outside riding my bike.  Last week of training before the Gran Fondo hundred mile next saturday here in town.  The view around the lake this weekend was incredible.  The winds were extremely calm, and the temperature was perfect.  Spent some of it riding with Sarah, and a friend of ours was up this weekend camping with her family, Cory Ann, and she rode part of it with us.  Cory Ann told me she is going to start her own consecutive exercise streak.  So with this 2 days of bike riding with us, she now has …. 2 consecutive days!  Woo hoo!  Keep it going.

It is easy to get lost in the scenery as you are riding outside, or just spending time outside in general.  There is no comparison to being on a treadmill, or stationary bike inside.  There is always something to look at.  The fields all look good, and you can see how everything is changing over the summer.  I went by one field earlier where it was just covered in hay bales.

It was just peaceful to watch.  Very quiet, other than the birds flying around.  Lots to see in South Dakota.  Get outside and take it all in!

Keep moving everybody!

Family! Friends! Fitness!

Yesterday was the 29th Annual Kampeska mini triathlon…and it was one of the biggest yet for participants!  We had great weather…minimal wind, but very humid, and by the time the run portion started, it got really hot.  We got sprinkles on a few times, which helped out quite a bit.  This was the first time for my son Nick, and daughter Molly, as well as my marathon training partner Steve.  We got a chance to see one of Sarah’s college classmates, Lori, who came up from Brookings, to participate in her first thriathlon.  Here we all are prior to the start.

We got to spend time doing a different adventure,  and spend time with family and friends.  It was a great way to spend the morning, and stay fit.  One thing the triathlon does for you is you is spending  time doing different types of execise so it is less likely to get bored with one specific exercise activity.  We had a great time, and now we are talking about we are going to do this again next year!  The summer is going fast, so continue to take advantage of the weather, and get outside and enjoy!  Keep moving everybody!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers out there.  It turned out to be a great day.  Nice and sunny, and no wind. I took Sarah out for a walk this afternoon along the lake.  Very nice scenery!

You can see the lake is very calm.  The temperatures will be picking up as the week goes on.  We are now in taper mode as this coming saturday we will be competing in Fargo, with Sarah doing the 1/2 marathon, and I will be doing the marathon.

Now we just need all the leaves to get back on the trees.  Regardless, it was a very nice day.  Hope all of you took advantage of it and got out and spent time outside.  Keep moving everybody!

Just what this doctor ordered!

Finally!  We have a good weekend.  Warm out, and you can all see how many people have been outside this weekend.  We are either doing some yard work, out walking, riding, running…whatever!  We just want to be outside.  It has been too long of a Winter, and we were all anxious to get outside and enjoying things again.  The snow, other than a few snow piles that had been really high, it now melted.

Even Buddy is outside in his kennel and just taking it all in.  He can look around, and watch everything much easier from the outside than in the house.  He has been on some walks too, and is definitely happy about it.   So everybody, take advantage of this weather now, and get out, and get moving!  This is exactly what this doctor ordered!  Keep moving everybody!

Excuses! Excuses! Excuses!

With the weather we are having, it is easy to have all the excuses come out as to why you can’t exercise.  “I am sick of snow!; I am too tired!; It is too cold; It is too windy;  The sun is not out; I have too many other things to get done.”  And on and on it goes.  Believe me, I think I have used all of these at one time, plus about 1,000 others.  If we waited for the perfect moment, we would never get out the door.  Now, I am the first to admit, I am really tired of this weather too.  It makes it very hard to get motivated to get outside.  So, if the weather is not cooperating, then keep it inside yet.

Get on the treadmill, or the bike, and put on the TV or the radio, or use your ipod.  Whatever it takes to help keep your mind off of the activity.  I just got some DVD’s to use that have me running or walking out in the woods, or in California along the ocean.  You literally get to follow along with someone else walking or running.  They have a music background, so you can just lose yourself in the scenery, and it is the next best thing to being outside. The more you can keep your mind interested in something, the easier it gets.  Which brings up some topics to discuss.  What do you think about when you are out walking, running, or biking?  What do you think of during that 20 or 30 minutes of time?  Or if you are doing a marathon, like Steve and I, what do you think about during a 3-3 1/2 hour run?  I will fill you in on what I think about, but would like to hear what you keeps you going as well.  Stay tuned for future posts on this.  Keep moving everybody!
