Personal Time to Reflect on What is Important

We all have those days when life just seems hectic, and we have no idea how we are going to get everything done.  Take a step back, take a deep breath, and remember what is truly important.  My recent vacation in Mexico was a perfect time for “reflection”, and relaxation.  What is important to me?  Here is number one!

I have said many times in public, and on this blog, my main reason for the consecutive exercise streak is to try and help me stay healthy, and be around longer for my family.  Here is the love of my life.  Words can’t express what Sarah means to me.  I am going to enjoy having her as long as I can.

There was time there for relaxing, and just listening to the ocean, where I got to just sit back and realize what I truly have, and to appreciate it all even more.  Forget about the little stuff, because in reality, it truly is “little”, and won’t mean anything in the long term.   Here are some views I got to witness, and was able to sit back and really have some quiet time to be able to truly appreciate what I have in my life.

It was easy to watch all of this and just forget about all of those other little, trivial things in life.  Don’t take the days we have for granted.  We don’t know what the future is going to bring.  Enjoy life to the fullest!  Keep moving everybody!

I said on my last post how tough Hills can be for running.  Here I am at the top of one, and the sign in the background says “Moon Mountain”…How appropriate…it flet like we ran to the moon!

Here is Sarah…of course, some of us felt a little better after them.  It was a good thing I took the picture several minutes later after she was able to recovery!

The scenery there was very nice.  Getting to watch all of this kind of made the Hills a little easier to take.

My true training partners…Steve, my marathon partner, and of course Sarah, my forever running partner.  It always make adventures somewhere else that much better when you can explore it first hand out running.  Some of these places we would not see had we not been out on foot. Resolutions Vs Lifestyle Changes

New Year’s is almost here and with it comes the inevitable resolutions. We confidently vow to shed pounds and inches to change our lives for the better but these resolutions tend to fail.  We often set lofty goals like “ I will lose 15 pounds” which is a valid goal but could take up to a year to properly reach it.  We tend to eat too little and exercise to vigorously during the first couple of days just to give up in frustration and hunger. I am not a big fan of resolutions, because they typically aren’t followed long term, I am however a big fan of lifestyle changes!

Here are some tips and guidelines to assist you in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight loss and lifestyle change:

¨ Set realistic, short-term goals such as “I will lose 1 pound/week.” After success with the first reasonable goal, the next goals will seem attainable.

¨ Do not keep junk food at the house. If unhealthy choices are in sight, you might be tempted to reach for them. Remember, out of sight, out of mind!

¨ Eat a serving of protein and whole grains to feel full longer which could curb hunger cues.

¨ Eat the majority of food during the earlier parts of your day. This can help end that bad habit of late night snacking.

¨ Pay attention to feelings like boredom, loneliness, stress, and fatigue, which can cause mindless eating. Only eat when you are actually hungry and think of food as fuel.

¨ Use smaller plates, bowls, etc. to help keep portions under control. This could help trick the mind into thinking you are eating a large portion.

¨ Eat slowly and away from distraction, if possible. This will allow you to pay attention to any cues of becoming full. Remember it takes 20 minutes for you to feel full.

¨ Try to get more active each day. By aiming to increase your exercise level by 10 minutes each day, you can build up strength and stamina gradually, which could help you from not quitting exercising in frustration.

These guidelines can help end the New Year’s resolution failures and hopefully create healthy, lifelong habits.

Holiday Tips

The holidays are in full swing, which means festive food, and busy schedules. Many families are enjoying old traditions, or making new ones. Unfortunately also during these Christmas experiences, many people find themselves experiencing weight gain. Countless family gatherings and baking Christmas goodies all month are grounds for overeating, without any time to spare for exercise. By making few simple changes over the day, the holidays do not have to mean weight gain! Here are some simple tips to try out between traveling, parties, cooking, and company.

  1. An Early Resolution? – Rather than waiting for New Years to start a resolution, make it easier on yourself and gradually work up to your resolution by New Years. This will also help you to stay focused and maintain weight over the holidays, so you can see faster results after. If your goal is to lose weight, maybe you will try to walk two days a week now, and by New Year’s you will be built up to walking 5 days a week!
  2. Stress less about Exercise- Rather than stressing about shopping and cleaning this year, think of this as a time to multitask. Housework is one of the best ways to get in a workout over the holidays. Whether it’s moving around the kitchen while you bake, or vacuuming before company…it all burn calories! Shopping through the mall crowds, standing in line, and bringing bags out to your car all are positive experiences now that you can count it as a workout, right?
  3. Quality Time– Rather than taking away from family time to work out, invite your family to do something as a group. Wake up on Christmas morning and enjoy some yoga together before presents, or take the kids out ice-skating or sledding after the famous Christmas dinner. Just remember, building a snowman or looking at Christmas lights will also provide memories that last longer than the memories watching a movie would.
  4. Think Before You Eat – Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed.  If you find yourself overeating at one meal, go light on the next. Try to fill your plate with the lower calorie items such as vegetable dishes, and lean proteins, then take smaller portions of the rich foods. Eat slowly, socialize, and enjoy every bite!

Overall, it’s the holidays and you need to enjoy yourself! Don’t restrict yourself from family time and enjoying some of your favorite holiday foods, but be mindful and plan ahead! Stay healthy this season, then after the holidays, your mind and body will thank you!

You Only Turn 50 Once…

You only turn 50 once, so you better make it count when that time comes.  I try to be health conscious and stay fit, but sometimes, you need to splurge a little.  When I came into work on Friday, my staff had the place decorated for my 50th birthday, and my nurse Chris made this cake for me.

About the only candy I will eat is peanut M & M’s, and she made this cake with it covered in them!  The top was a carrot cake, and the bottom was marble.  She did a great job.  This was the best cake! Here is a close-up view of it.

Did this cake have a lot of calories?  Yes.  Did it stop me from eating several pieces, including over the weekend.  Not on your life!  You need to enjoy these types of things in life when it comes along.  If you eat these type of things in moderation, then you can have them, and enjoy them without guilt.  If we restrict ourselves too much, then we end up crabby, and depressed.  I will make up for things with my diet after this, and I still exercise everyday so I can have these “good things” in life.  So can you!  It is OK to reward yourselves once in a while, but then get back on track, and take care of yourself.  For me, I just told myself “I only turn 50 once, so take advantage of it”.  That is truly what life is about.  Enjoy it!  Keep moving everybody!

The Importance of Living Healthy

As many of you know my maiden name is Likness and my father is Dr.Clark Likness. I have discussed in previous posts about how growing up in a home where medical terms and science were discussed on a regular basis helped shape my interest and passion for health, wellness, and nutrition. Healthy eating and regular activity were norms in our household and have continued to be a focus for us as we all get older. Many of you have probably heard stories, rumors, or maybe the actual truth about what has been going on about my Dad recently.  There seems to be a lot more of the rumors versus the actual truth going around about what happened, that Dad and I decided it was time to discuss it on our wellness blog to not only inform you all of the truth, but show how important healthy living, choices, and wellness checks with your regular doctors are.

“Dr.Likness” to many of you, “Dad” to me, “Clark” to friends, and “Grandpa Clarky” to my nieces and nephew has been out of the clinic on medical leave since the middle of August. He is doing well and will be coming back to the clinic to see patients in a few weeks. In the early summer, he noticed he was having some issues with his veins in his legs and decided to get it checked out. A small tumor was found on his kidney and after multiple tests and consults with various top notch health professionals, they concluded the tumor needed to be removed as there was a possibility of it being cancer. If removed, he was cured, no matter if it was benign or malignant. In the meantime, he was working on some landscaping at my parent’s lake cabin and blew out his rotator cuff in his shoulder and developed a hernia. In Dad’s early years (before becoming a doctor), he helped his grandparents and parents on the farm and worked road construction. The years of manual labor and hard work caught up to him this summer and basically his body was falling apart! So facing the fact that he needed to have all of these issues taken care of, he decided to do them all at once so that he could be out at the same time for them and not have to take multiple medical leaves of absence from the clinic. It may seem crazy to have it all done in the same time period, but he thought it was best for himself and his patients to not be out multiple times. In August he had the tumor on his kidney removed and the surgery was successful. The pathology report came back that it was benign, which means NO CANCER! We were relieved and thrilled with the news. A few weeks later, he had the hernia and his shoulder repaired. He is now recovering from that and engaging in therapy to get himself back up to steam and have full range of motion again. The picture above is from our last short boat ride around the lake this last weekend before we pulled everything out for winter. As you can see he’s looking good!

There have been multiple rumors going around that he has liver cancer, lung cancer, and is retiring, and we want you all to know NONE of these are true!! He is doing great and will be back to work and 100% health soon! Each doctor he saw through all of this remarked how he went into surgeries, surgeries were successful, and the recovery will be better all because he has kept himself in good shape. He exercises regularly and makes efforts to eat healthy. The benefits of making these daily choices are rewarding! In addition, regular check ups and screenings are essential for good health and prevention as if he wouldn’t have gotten checked out, there is a chance that the tumor in his kidney could have progressed into a cancerous tumor. Even though making healthy choices, practicing portion control and moderation, and making time for regular activity aren’t always appealing (yes it does take some effort and motivation!), we need to make these efforts to take good care of our bodies as we only get one! We decided to share his story to show you how important healthy living and proper self care is…and a little piece of me wanted to help set the record straight! 😉 Dad’s motivation continues to be his family (all of us below minus the newest addition, my niece Blair who was born in the spring) as he wants to be around to enjoy all of life’s events with us! We all need to find that certain motivation to help us stay on track with our goals and efforts! If you don’t have it now, I encourage you to do some serious thinking on what motivates you to live healthy. That motivation and incentive is your key for a long and healthy life!
