The State Swim meet for SD was this last 3 day weekend down in SF. Lots of kids! Very hot and humid. Here is Megan on lane 5 taking off for the backstroke. Tons of kids swimming, and lots of parents screaming!

Here is Megan leading in the backstroke. If only I could swim like her! Swimming is a great form of exercise, and when we have access to a pool here in town, it is one form of exercise to take advantage of. I had a patient in today who started swimming earlier this year. He had neck and back pain and was overweight. He could not swim one length of the pool to start with, which is 25 meters. He now has no back or neck pain, swims a couple of MILES at a time, loves it, and has lost over 25#! If something is worth having or fighting for, then you have to make the effort to keep going. If he had quit at the beginning, nothing would have changed. You have to find your own motivation, match it to your abilities, and work at it! It will be worth the process. Good luck!

Friday was the opening day ceremony for the National Softball Tournament here in Watertown. Some 58 teams, with over 800 athletes participated. It was quite the ceremony with everybody marching in and being introduced. It was great as a spectator as well.

Here is Molly’s team…Spiegel Construction, for 18 and under teams. Great weather for the tournament, and to watch as well. Lots of walking involved, not only for the athletes, but for all of us parents and spectators getting back and forth to all of the games. We were getting just as tired as they were. Lots of fun, and memories to last forever.

My sons softball team for 14 and under captured 2nd place at the State Softball tournament in Huron this weekend. Great for parents watching, and with the kids playing lots of games, is a great way to exercise and stay in shape, and above all, have fun.

Great weather for the tournament. Sarah and I were sponsors for their team, and was great watching them progress over the summer. Everybody has a good time, and has the ability to participate. Good job Brown Clinic/Glacial Lakes property management team!

Yesterday was the Run Around Lake Kampeska 1/2 Marathon, and also a 10K and 5K race. Here is the finish lines for the 5K and 10K. We had a big thunderstorm, and over 2 inches of rain earlier during the night, but cleared in time for the race. It did not do much to help with the humidity though, as it was still very warm running during the race.

These road race/fun runs are a good social get-together as well. Everybody is either out to compete, or just get their exercise in with a group. Here people are gathering afterwards for food and awards. Everybody had a good time. These events are also a great way to meet new people, and everybody has the same intentions…they are trying to do something to help with their own health! Try one out if you never have participated in one before.

The triathlon last week had approx 83 individuals, and about 15 teams, with each of the teams either doing 1 leg of the triathlon, or at least some combination of the three. Here are 2 of the 3 members of “Team Reif”…the one on the left is my son Nick, who ran, and by him is his friend Sean, who rode on the bike.

The 3rd member of “Team Reif” is my daughter Megan, who swam. This was a great event to have your kids, or family members in general, get out and work together, and all have the opportunity to be active, and have fun.
Below is a picture of a true “family” committment to the event: Team Alwin. Leann and Dave participated, had their kids involved, brothers, and then parents who were the cheerleaders. They even had Team T-shirts made. They had a lot of fun, and they worked together, and all were able to participate in one way or another. This is how you stay active as a family. Make it fun, work together, make memories, and stay healthy!

A good friend of ours bought a gift card from Road ID.com to allow us to buy identification wrist bands to wear when we are out running or biking as a means of providing vital information in case of an emergency. I whited out our cell numbers on here for privacy of having it on the blog site. But these wrist bands provide important information that could some day be vital for us.

These are a good way of helping to provide information that could be critical under those circumstances. They also are good to wear when traveling, or even to wear on a regular basis daily. These are great not only for your own safety and benefit, but for those important to you. Thank you Cory Ann for making us aware, and purchasing these wrist ID bands for us. Get one for yourself at www.RoadID.com.
