The Life of a Running Doc: In the Beginning…

baby bicycle
We all have a beginning…a time when we were a baby, and how fast the years go as we grow older. But the tone that is set at that beginning can be a determining factor on how you will continue on with certain things as you get older. That is not to say that we cannot all change, but the effort involved in can be much easier if we start young. I exercise every day, and I will trace my roots back “to my beginning”. Here I am with my twin brother Don as we are being held by our older brothers, getting ready to be taken on a bike ride. Even back then, we were active. Of course, back then, we did not have all the electronics we have now, and only had 3 stations on a TV, and it was black and white. So we spend many hours outside playing, and being active. And, having our older siblings to follow, and learn from them.

baby stroller
My sister Mary had us out for a walk in our double stroller. The whole family could be out and be active. That is so important, even more so now today, with all the advancements we have, and all the different modes of entertainment we have to make us stay inside. Get out and get moving. When we were all small, we were all very active, and moving. We are made to move. We learned over time how to slow down, and maybe take the easier route. But we need to keep moving. “Use is or lose it”. I will tell that to my patients on an almost daily basis.

twins playing

Here we are getting into everything. Always busy, always moving. Remember those days, and keep the same spirit of moving alive. My grandma would always tell us that we needed to get outside and play or the “moss would grow under our feet”. Words of wisdom!

So step up to the front. Become a leader to those around you. Most important, be a leader to yourself, and prove that you can be more active. I will continue to show over time as I grew older how activities were a part of my life…the life of a running doc! The only problem is we did not have the cameras readily available to take pictures all the time like we do now. I had to do a lot of digging to try and find these! My patients will hear me tell them everyday that they need to keep working on their diet and increase their activity, and hear from me that “I will be telling you this until you are not here anymore!”. Keep active, make it fun. “Play to joyous abandon!” Keep moving everybody!

Becoming a Better You: Taking a Lifetime to Accomplish!

Dan and Sarah wedding
Going on almost 27 years now when Sarah and I said: “I do!”. It has been a great adventure. Ups and downs, good times, not so good times…but mostly, great times! We believed in each other then, and we do even more now. We have 3 kids, all now out of the house. One still in college, but the other 2 just graduated in May. We have been active ever since we started dating, and we still work out together, exercise together, and support and cheer each other on. It has taken continuous work and effort. It does not just happen. We push each other to keep going. That is what life is about. Finding that person, or people, who can support you, and you return the favor. I have written now for the last several months on what it takes for you…for me…to become better. Confidence, courage, vision, teamwork, remembering our past, how to improve the future, and taking time to relax. I also discussed about never stop learning, becoming a difference maker, and going after your dreams. It is a continuous process, and one where we will make mistakes along the way. We just have to figure out how to pick ourselves back up, stay motivated, and continue to put one foot in front of the other. The process never ends! We need to work on becoming better for our entire lifetime. For Sarah and I, it has continued from that day when we said “I do”. We have not quit. We keep pushing forward. And…we are having fun along the way, and enjoying adventures I would have never dreamed of.

post race
We participate in a lot of races together, and we sponsor a lot of races/events to help make sure there are plenty of activities for other people to enjoy too. It is also a way to help other people stay motivated, and to get out and stay active, and help them take control of their own health. As Family Physicians, that is also our job description. Our primary focus is on the family…how to take care of them, how to help them in tough times, sick times, and to help keep them motivated as well. If we are not, how can we expect anyone else to be? This is all part of becoming better, and we learn along the way. Life always has a curve ball to throw, and we either swing and miss, and learn from it, or hit it head on! You don’t know how things would be unless you try.

Dan and Sarah current

We have gone through many things together over the years, and hopefully there are many more adventures, many more races, many more activities to spend together. I am going to help Sarah finish her first marathon coming up in October. And, we are running for charity, helping to raise money for research in regards to Friedreich’s Ataxia, and there are several people in Watertown alone afflicted with this genetic disease. We are working together…helping each other, and others. We have many finish lines yet to cross together!

crossing the finish line

We start together, and we finish things together. That helps me become a better me! I am always learning though. It takes continuous effort, just like taking care of your own health, you have to take care of your mental health. Be supportive…be there for others! There may be some occasional posts that I make have again if the right subject comes up again on “Becoming a Better You”. For now, I am going to begin something new. Something new as I/we continue to Strive to Survive. I am titling this next segment of posts as “A Running Doc’s Life”. In it I will explore different aspects of myself, and different times of my life, including current issues, about my life as a doctor…a running doctor…and what I do to help promote exercise and health, and hopefully lead by example. I will help explain things that I have gone through, good things, and struggles, including injuries, and what you can do for them, and can do instead while you may be injured. I write this blog in an attempt to help motivate and inspire others, but, I find it helps inspire and motivate me as well. We all need that. We all need to be reminded of that, and how to do it. We all need to keep working on it as well, “in good times, and in bad times, in sickness and in health, for all the days of my/our life”. Sound familiar? We took a vow all those years ago, to each other, for each other, and will help you too! So stay tuned…if it inspires or helps motivate somebody, then it is all worthwhile! If it is helpful to you, let me know, and feel free to pass it on to someone else…maybe it can help them too! If you become better, everybody around you wins!

Keep moving everybody!

Becoming a Better You: Always work at being a better Dad!

go dad go

As we come upon another Father’s Day, it is once again time to reflect back on the accomplishments that have been made, what went right, what went wrong, and how or what can I do to improve things. Sarah and I over the years have always been active, and we have tried to teach our kids to be active as well. It is that important! There are so many other adventures and activities that you can do together, that will make lifetime memories. This first picture Sarah had made T-shirts for one of Grandma’s marathon’s that I was in, and these guys were my walking cheerleaders. I would come down the road to hear them cheering me on, and to see what they were wearing! Boy, talk about getting fired up. It is one of my favorites pictures, and times, to look back on. There are many times to look back at, with the trips we have made, activities we have done. That is what makes pictures so nice. It helps you to remember details that you may have otherwise forgotten.

awesome dad
This was one year, on Father’s Day, taking a picture with me wearing my shirt that says “Awesome Dad”! Hard to realize they were that little once. There were many times we got to spend out at the Lake as well.

fishing
Here we are showing off the fish we caught. Just a little excitement from everybody here! They also came with us to many races/marathons, and were my ongoing cheerleaders. It was great having them come along. Now they are starting to participate in these races with us! Here my twins are with me the following morning after one of Grandma’s Marathon races.

marathon twins

The perfect way to feel ready to go again! With what we do for our jobs, it made it hard many times to figure out how we could spend more time with them. When you look back, there are always things you wish you could change, and how you would spend your time. But, at the time, we did the best we could, and tried to make many lifetime memories. We had a lot of fun when they were growing up. I learned many things from my Dad. I probably got to spend more time with him after he retired, as his job entailed working evenings. We never wanted for anything, except being able to spend more time with him. Later on, we just had to spend more quality time together!

dad and I

Of course, this may be Father’s Day, but none of these things would have happened without help from Sarah. We were truly a team. We remain a team yet. Yesterday Sarah and I participated in the “Race for Chase”, a 10 mile team race where one of you has to ride, and one has to run. You start together, and have to finish together, and you can trade off as often as you want. We won our age group for coed teams…the age group I refer to as “Team Old”! We had fun, and hopefully there will be many more running, biking, and exercising adventures to do together, not only with the two of us, but later with the kids, and then grandkids.

my 3 kids final
My three kids are growing up, and moving on with their own lives. Hopefully, we have instilled in them how to become better at taking care of themselves, staying active, and being involved as a family. We all can work at becoming better. Me included…I always have to continue to work on being a better Dad. I got one shot at it, and the job description keeps changing, so hopefully I can continue to adapt and change on the fly. But, one thing is for sure. I will never forget my walking billboard at the marathons. The front of the shirts you saw at the beginning. But, when they would turn around as I ran by, and it was the back of the shirts that I will never forget!

we love you

This is what it is all about! This is why I want to be around longer. This is why I need to continue to work on becoming a better Dad…always. You do the same, whether as a Dad, or Mom, or friend, or whatever! Work on becoming a better you!

Keep moving everybody!

Becoming a Better You: Utilizing a Little Help From Our Friends!

Dan running
There are always time when we need to work out, no matter what type of exercise, by yourself. Time to think, time to sweat, time for you! But, there are those times when it would be nice to have help from others, whether family or friends. As time goes on, these two groups, family and friends, can be hard to differentiate. They can become one in the same. We need them for support, for motivation, for laughing, for working out our problems. A lot of times their problems are similar. Talking about it can resolve things easier. We become better, and they become better. When one of them gets hurt, or injured doing exercise, things are not the same. Something is missing. I have written on this before. Whether it was myself, or a family member, or a member of our run club, something is missing when one of can’t participate. Jill has been hurt with a sore foot lately, and her brother Steve had been dealing with a sore foot, and then my nurse Chris has been dealing with a sore foot while she was training for her half marathon. Bottom line, we will all have some type of injuries along the way, but the benefit that comes when we do exercise, and participate in activities, far outweighs that risk of injury. All we can do is support, listen, help them if we can, and wait until they can return. Until you are in that situation yourself, it is hard to describe that feeling when you can’t participate, and can’t wait for that time to be back at it again ourselves.

WARC 2

Our run club continues to keep growing…not only in numbers, but in friendship. There are some of those times when it is time to meet for a run, and I am not really in a mood to go run, but I am in a mood for spending time with these people…friends…who become like family! We are there for each other. We get to know each other. We worry about each other! We become better ourselves because of our friends!

Molly thumbs up

The Hospital Hill run took place yesterday, and my son Nick, and one of my daughters, Molly, and her boyfriend, came home to run in this. My daughter Molly is “thumbs up” ready to go for this. We got to spend time as a family, running, walking, exercising, together! And of course, members of our run club were there as well.

hospital hill WARC

All smiles after the race. We had some other that were there as well, but they had to leave sooner for other family activities, but we were there…supporting each other, cheering each other…just being there! Jill was able to run it, and we were all cheering! My son Nick came up and brought all of his college room mates as well!

Nick and roommates

The four stooges! They did great, and they had a good time! This is what memories are made of! We become better ourselves, by supporting those around us, and they return the favor. Can it really can much better than this? That is what makes life rewarding…fulfilling…enjoyable!

family quote

I really cannot say it anybody than this! To all of my run club friends: Am I wrong with this? Thanks for all the support you give me as well! Run on everybody! Keep moving everybody!

Summer Snacks!

YogurtParfaits

Summer has officially started now that school is out! The kids are back home and they’re going to be eating more of the foods that you keep stocked for them at home. Active children burn through their energy stores very quickly and need to replenish them often. Snacking is an important part of keeping your kids energized for their play-filled summer days.

Snacks should be a combination of fiber and protein so that they are filling and satisfying. Pistachios are a good snack as they contain both fiber and protein. You can also pick out two foods that will meet the fiber and protein combination needs. Some ideas are:

  • An apple and a teaspoon of peanut butter
  • String cheese and a few whole wheat crackers
  • Baby carrots and hummus
  • Low-fat yogurt and almonds
  • Mixed nuts and raisins
  • Celery sticks filled with peanut or almond butter

Just be sure to keep in mind that snacks are just to get by until the next mealtime, so snacks should not be a significant source of calories. Kids have small stomachs so keep the portion sizes small as well. This is a good time to instill healthy habits in your child so try to avoid having the TV or video games going during snack time in order to discourage mindless munching. Any fruit, vegetable, low-fat dairy product, or whole wheat grain product makes a good snack so find out what your child likes and get creative with the combinations!

Becoming a Better You: Remember!

Pa army digital final
This Memorial Day, take the time to remember what other people have done for us. Things like our freedom, and in this case for me, a home, a family, and a great role model to follow: My Dad! It has been 3 years now since he has passed away, and not one day goes by where I don’t think of him. It is nice to have pictures to sit back and look back at, and then all of those memories come flooding back, both smiles and tears! Looking back especially at these pictures of my Dad when he was in the Army. To think of what he had to give up, in order for us to have what we have now.

Pa army 2 digital final
To be away from home when you are that young, and then not knowing whether you are going to get to go back home to see everybody again. I can’t imagine what things would have been like under those circumstances. On this Memorial Day, we need to appreciate everything all of those people did for our freedom, and remember those who not only came home, but those who did not. Just REMEMBER!
timeless treasures
We always have our memories to look back on, it is just taking the time to be doing this, and to realize they truly are timeless treasures.

Family early years
My Family and I have changed a lot over the years. As times continues to go on, the same people may not be in the picture anymore, but that does not mean we forget about them. It does mean we have to appreciate them even more while they are still here, and to remember to tell them how much you care about them while they can hear it. We need to remember to take care of ourselves as well, so we can have more time to be around, and enjoy life with them as well.
Dad and I
This is one of the last pictures I have of me with my Dad. It is both good and bad. Good, because I got to spend time with him, bad because his memory was getting so bad I had to keep telling him who I was. That is why memories are so important to have, and to keep thinking of at times. This can help us to not forget. He could not remember something that just happened, or what was going on at the time, but if you brought up things when he was younger, he could talk on and on about that. So, that is what we talked about. They truly were timeless treasures. He did not forget about those things. Everything cannot be taken away from us. So I am also going to be taking the time today to remember my Day…remember all of the good times, and will again realize how much I miss him! Become a better you…REMEMBER!
