Traveled to Pittsburgh for a conference on monday, and walked across the street from the hotel to hit the bike trail for a run monday morning. Great weather, upper 60’s at 6AM, got to almost 80 later in the day. What a nice change. I had never been to Pennsylvania before. One of my goals is to run in every state in the US…I can now take Pennsylvania off the checklist.

The bike trail along the river leads right past the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Sports Training facility. Here they do the latest research when it comes to concussions in athletes, which is what the conference was on. Now I can use this knowledge back home when evaluating athletes with concussions, and helping to decide return to play, and oveall being safe in sports.

I am afraid I am going to have to come up with some alternative routes for running, and later biking. Here is one of my spots. City Park. The Lake has now completely engulfed the park and bike trail. This is where we go along when we do the triathlon in July. Went running along it this morning when it was still dark out…not a good feeling with all this water coming. There are multiple sections along the bike path all through town that are under water. At this rate, it will take quite awhile before we are even going to be able to be on them.

Sections like this are abundant. The trail that goes by our cabin is completely under. The Lake is still rising, and not sure when we are going to be done with this. This is how flooding can impact us all. Everyone who uses the bike trails will have to come up with alterative routes for awhile.

Spent Saturday in the Aberdeen Barnett Center for High School Varsity
Track meet. Molly and Nick both competed, Molly with the 400 and 800 meters, and Nick with the 3000 meters. Both are good runners, and it is important to make sure your kids stay active. What better example for them to follow then to stay active yourself. Here Molly is coming around the final turn on her 400 meters, and then…..

…Nick on one of his turns for the 3000 meters. Nick is an 8th grader competing right now in varsity. A true distance runner…must take after his Dad! Way to go kid!!! It made for a fun day.

As if the weather has not been bad enough, we start getting more snow here today. Combination of rain and snow, BIG snowflakes. Sarah and I said “Enough” and we went outside anyway and went running, going for a 6 mile run. Now, this is the type of scenery we had to look at during this run, but that did not stop us from actually having another image in our head to focus on during this run…That image is the following…

…pretending we were back in Mexico, running along their trail, among the palmtrees, feeling the sun shining, and not having rain and snow pelting your face. Sometimes, you need to focus on the good things that you did, to help get through some of the bad things. The weather here is definitely one of the bad things that just “keeps on going”. So…put your head down, keep focusing, concentrating, get moving, and keep on going!

Anybody else getting really tired of Winter? Everywhere you go, people are talking about the weather, and how it is getting them down. The weather is getting us all down! When we get “down”, then everything else seems to slip too, especially our efforts to take care of ourselves. This is a time when you have to dig down deep to stay motivated with your goals, to stay focused on what is important, in the face of all of these outside challenges. I think it is time to focus on some motivational points to help keep our focus. Here is a view of one of the lakes out in the Black Hills this past summer. It is easy to just get lost in your thoughts when out looking/walking/hiking in something this nice and peaceful. Stay tuned as I concentrate on some other views/aspects/pictures to help get us, and me, through these weather challenges right now…

Efforts from the weekend of working doing sandbagging. Lots of walking, lifting, shoveling. Kids are still sore. Hopefully with all the the rain/snow that everybody will be safe, and not be flooded out. If you were here in 1997, you know what I am talking about. It is not something I want to go through again. Everybody keep their chins up…this weather has got to stop soon, right??

The only thing I want to accomplish yet out of all of this is having some other good workouts emptying all of these bags, hoping none of them are really going to be needed. Stay tuned over the next few weeks…
