The 30th Anniversary of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System fund raiser was last night. The them was “off to the races” and featured a Kentucky Derby theme. They had a video of the actual running of the Kentucky Derby at the event last night as well. It was a fundraiser for cancer services at Prairie Lakes. BASH stands for Building A Superior Healthcare System. It was great food and great auctions, both silent and live, as a means of raising money towards use at the cancer center. It was a fun night, with everyone dressed up in their hats! A lot of work is done by the Prairie Lakes Healthcare Foundation in getting all of the tables filled, auction items collected, and then just be able to get everything pulled off for the evening. Well worth it, and fun time. Hope to see you all there next year!
As you can see, the grandkids came for the weekend! That does not stop our routine of working out. They just get to join in…and they love it! They are ready to go, and join, and be with us doing all of the exercises that we work on. We make if fun for them too!
We just make some modifications on how we do some of the exercises. We get them involved, and they are ready to go, and want to do more. The laughing and giggling also makes the workout much more enjoyable for us as well. They absolutely love doing situps because they are our weights to help hold us down!
Then they want to take turns sitting on our knees afterwards, so we play a game with them. “One for the money…two for the show…three to get ready…and four to go!” Then we open our knees, and they get trapped between us. The belly laughs from them are hilarious. If they had their way, all we would do is sit-ups!! Of course, the activity goes on inside the house as well. Connor is unstoppable with the energy, so we have to have exercise programs on to have him wear off some more energy!
This show is on you tube and is called “Danny Go”…appropriate if you ask me!! Connor is nonstop with moving with it. I get tired just watching him. But, the best part of the weekend is the snuggling and watching the smiles!
Man do I love my grandkids! We just sit back and wait for more! It is fun spending time with them, but one thing is for sure, when they come visit us, we are going to be active. Now that the weather is getting better, we will be riding bikes, hauling them behind our bikes to go to the park, go out walking, or what they really like are the toy “lawnmower races”. Push the toy mower from one end of the driveway to the other and see who wins. Of course they win, and the problem for us is they never want to stop! So, keep active just to be able to keep up with the grandkids! Keep moving everybody!
Spring is getting closer. Our run club this AM finished by running up the top of the Hospital Hill! We were all staring into the sun. No problem though. We are never going to complain about the sun being out. It is time to get back to the sunglasses. It was actually a very nice run this AM. Decent temps, and no wind. The temps are on the rise now. I am hopeful this past week with 8 inches of snow was our last “hooray” of Winter. Spring let’s go!
It is so much better watching the sunrise in the AM with the ice all gone. It just automatically fires you up to be outside. We would all much rather be outside running than working out inside. Amazing scenery!
Going out for walks in the evening is great for the sunsets. Each one is different. Take it all in. Enjoy being back outside. We are almost through the last remnants of Winter. Time to bring it on…
Keep in mind it is always easier to get out with someone when you exercise. Whether family, friends, your pets…just get them and head out.
Enjoy it. Keep moving everybody! Take advantage of the weather now. Move!
When the weather is crappy outside, it is much easier to do some of your workout inside. Saturday morning, we did go for a couple mile run but after we hit the Reiflex center for a weight workout. We hit the Reiflex Center (our garage) for sure at least twice a week and strive for 3 times a week. It is a great way to work out and get rid of some frustration as well. It is always easier when you have a partner helping you out.
We started off with triceps dips. When we first started these, you could definitely notice you had muscles in the back of your arm. This really helps for running as well.
We also did some leg work as well. We try to mix it up where we do 2 exercises of arms, 2 of legs, and 1 core, then we do 5 rounds of those 5 exercises. Each of the sessions for the week are all different.
We did our quad exercises, then turned and did our hamstring lifts. You are definitely feeling things by the time you get to your 5th set. Then we moved on to the bench press.
Sarah struggles more here, but she has definitely been making progress. We are both in training for the South Dakota Senior games coming in August.
For the Senior games, the weight you have to bench is based on your age, not on your weight. So, somebody could have a hundred pounds on me, and we have to lift the same. The contest is how many times you can bench at that weight. When we started, I had to bench 125#, but now that I hit 60, I have to do 115#. Much better…but we are both making progress.
Then for core, this time either sit-ups or leg/arm extensions. You feel these when the set gets done. What makes it a little tougher is we do this first, then change and go outside for a run…when you are already tired. You especially feel it in the legs. That is how strength is made, so we are pushing each other. We do each of these exercises once, then repeat them all again until we have done 5 sets.
Of course, we have to show each other who is the toughest one! I hate making Sarah feel bad, so….
At any rate, we keep pushing each other. I would not go out and do this very often if she was not out there too. So, find a training partner, and make it happen. You become accountable to each other. Even if you can’t be in the same place at the same time… facetime works, or phone calls work…whatever it takes to push the other one. Have fun and get fit! Keep moving everybody!
What a weekend! Things were busy at work this week, but then we got to have Connor and Tessa beginning Thursday night through today. What a ball! They are always on the go. Needless to say, we went to bed early each night too! The hugs and snuggles make it all worthwhile!
Of course, it started off with building a fort! Connor had to name it something, so it was for the last 4 days “Fort Scrambled Eggs”! I am not sure where that came from, but whatever, they had a ball. Connor even took a nap in it one day–2 hours! Now those are some scrambled eggs!
Sarah had Friday off and took them to the park. The weather was decent that day too so lots of swings, and even took turns throwing pebbles in the lake!
Then back home, and it was time for Connor to ride his bike, and Tessa got to ride the tractor! Both of them were cruising. It was a good thing it was nice out Friday, because it rained all day Saturday. So Saturday I took Connor to Target, and then Menards, so we could, according to him, go “Man shopping”! Then we met my daughter Megan for lunch at Perkins. Great day!
I lost count how many books we read this weekend. Both of them were glued to them all! As you can see, the shelves behind them are full of books– (in fact, that entire book shelf/drawers are full of books!) So were the same one we read to our kids all those years ago. We saved them all for a reason. They never outdate. Never a dull moment. Grandkids really do make life Grand! All the experience of raising kids helps here. Now we are again a pro. I did forget how tired out we get from it all too. We all slept well at night. Afterall, we have to get ready to go at it again the next day! Enjoy all those memory making times. Keep moving everybody!
Every week life brings new adventures and challenges. Are we always ready for them? Maybe not. But you do learn to go with the flow. Make the best of everything that comes up, and you may just find that it also brings about some of the best things for the day, or the week, or maybe even for the year. Never a dull moment!
Wednesday night our run club ended the day with having a costume run just before Halloween. It was windy and cold, but it was still a good time going for a run all decked out in costumes. Sarah and I joined in, and I was a gallon of milk, and Sarah was a chocolate chip cookie. So, of course, I spent the run chasing her! I had to be the milk as she is “lactose intolerant!” Ha! We then went out to Dempseys afterwards and do what we runners do even better than running–Eat!
Our grandson Connor went out on Halloween as a dinosaur! He was having a ball! We got pictures and videos but were not able to be there in person. We do get the grandkids next weekend though! Yay!!
Plenty of costumes at the hospital and clinic. Here our radiation oncologist Dr. Buechler, went as an inflatable dinosaur as well. Their motto was “we make cancer extinct”! Awesome! Several of the clinic nurses all dressed up as Dr. Larson.
They had their mustaches, plaid shirt, and black pants! What a riot! It is even more funny when we know someone well enough to predict what to wear!
Of course, I am still taking advantage of the decent weather and try to get out for pictures when the clouds and skies cooperate! Some awesome sunsets this week! Here a few more!
And a sunrise…
The colder weather will be coming. Try to get out and do more while the weather cooperates. It is also a great time to be watching all of the scenery. Winter still has it beautiful moments too, it is just the wind and the cold to have to deal with. Enjoy every day we have. Each week brings new adventures. What is it you are looking forward too? What are your plans? Goals? Always keep thinking. Always keep trying. Life is short. Experience everything you can and enjoy each week…and each day! Keep moving everybody!
