Running…don’t know how much you miss it until you can’t!

Running is always an adventure…sure there may be good days and not so good days, but I realize how much I miss it when I can’t.  I got hurt last week lifting weights last monday…a groin tear.  You never realize how much all of those muscles come into play just to get up and down from a chair, or into a car, much less trying to run.  I did try twice last week…a very slow jog for a 1/4 of a mile, followed by a walk for a 1/4 mile, then back again for 4 miles total each time.  Overall, it hurt to much to keep doing it.  I can walk or use the elliptical with no pain, so at least my exercise streak continues.  I would rather be running though…especially now with it being Summer out.  Hopefully this won’t take too long to heal up, but will have to see.  I still went to meet with the run club this AM, and when they took off, I put my walk in.  I was walking along the lake and having time to think.  It was a very nice morning, and the time for thinking is always good.  It was a time to put all things in perspective…such as upcoming goals, accomplishments thus far, and what is it that I am truly trying to accomplish?  There will be more thoughts and posts in this regards as time goes on.  For now, I will keep doing what I can, and get back to running as soon as I can.  The running is my first true sport, my time to get away from it all, my time for me!   Hopefully it will be soon.  Members of the run club from this AM…Sarah, who ended up going a different direction after a little while to go longer, and in the picture are Steve, Jill, Jackie, and Jennifer.  Also, as the picture below says, these are the feelings you get when you can’t run!  Keep going guys!  And, keep moving everybody!

Happy Father’s Day!

Once again, it is that time of year to celebrate our Dad’s!  We all have unique Fathers, with their own personalities, and character traits, both good and bad.  But, they are still our Dad’s, and that makes each one of them the best!  We all have learned a lot from them, and hopefully we will be able to keep those good qualities and traits alive and well forever, if when our Dad’s are no longer here.  My Dad passed away March of 2014, and this is now the 2nd Father’s Day without him.  It is still extremely difficulty, and I miss him a lot.  I have all the memories of him growing up to keep looking back at, and all of the pictures.  Every once in awhile I go sorting through pictures again and those memories come flooding back just like they were yesterday!  Hopefully, I have learned many of the good things passed down from him, and utilize those traits for my own kids.  Of all of the things to accomplish in life, I want to go from this life knowing that I will be remembered as a good Dad.  Almost any man can be a Father, but it is those special qualities, and characteristics, that make us unique, and have the honor of being called “Dad”!  Below are some pictures the last year with my Dad, and then their wedding picture, followed by my mom’s 80th birthday celebration.  Their love for each other never faltered after 59 years of marriage.  Hopefully, I will have that honor as well.  I love you Sarah, and thanks to you, we have Molly, Megan, and Nick.  What more can anybody really ask for?  Keep moving everybody!

Another successful Hospital Hill Run/Walk!

Yesterday, Saturday, June 13, marked another successful Hospital Hill Run/Walk.  It was our 19th year, and we had close to 200 people!  The weather was great, low 60’s, mild breeze…as a runner, you could not ask for much more.  It also happen to be National Get Outdoor Day, so it was a great way to kick it off with the run.  Below are several pictures of the event…Sarah, and my daughter Molly, and sister-in-law Suzy;registration, runners/walkers getting ready; past marathon running partner Tom, with Tim, and Brian as our bike rider leader; and  nurses from Brown Clinic, both past and present, with Chris, Susan, and Shelly.   It was a great way to spend the morning with other walkers/runners, and of course, friends!  We can all be outside, enjoy the weather, and get some exercise at the same time.  Keep moving everybody!

Hospital Hill Run…One “Hill” of a Good Time!

It is that time of year again.  The Hospital Hill Run is this coming Saturday, June 13, 8AM.  It has been 19 years now, and still going strong.  I originally started this event as a means to get people out and exercise, whether walking or running.  I just wanted to get people out and move!  It is now become a goal for people…wanting to finish this race, and “do the Hill”!  The finish line is at the top, and it has created a challenge for many of us.  No matter how many time many of us may of done this, that Hill presents a challenge to us all every time.  So, join us this Saturday…food, activity…tradition!  (The shirts this year are really cool too!)  Here are some pictures of the event, and sponsors.  The link to also download an application can be found at www.prairielake.com, and view under events.  The link is on the June 13 date, and you can download a registration form there as well.  Keep moving everybody!

Final High School Moment…Final State Track Meet

Well, this weekend marked the end of Nick’s high school adventure.  We were out in Sturgis and Rapid City for the State Track Meet.  It may not have been the final outcome that he wanted, but he still did well.  He gave it all he had, and that is all you can ask for.  The weather started out cold and rainy, then got sunny.  It was a good run all in all.  It was his final meet with his friends, classmates, running partners.  Once again, memories to last a lifetime.  He started out earlier in the week at the Spring Athletic Awards ceremony winning the Godfrey award.  It was started back in 2013, with Molly winning the first one for girls.  It is in tribute to Vic Godfrey, longtime coach for Watertown, who still helps out with Cross Country and Track, but retired in 2013.  The winner had to be in Track since 7th grade, show leadership, determination, experience high points, and low points during their years of  participation, and show how they can come back.  I am very proud of Nick for winning this (and Molly!).  This winner was chosen by the coaches.  Godfrey was, and is, a great coach, and someone to truly look up to.  This was the highlight of Nick’s career!  Good job Nick.  High School is now officially over…you made it, and you did well!  I am glad your mom and I got to experience it with you!  Keep moving everybody!
