Thanksgiving…Turkey, pumpkin pie, and…Running!

Turkey day run final

What things are common when it comes to Thanksgiving?  First of all…Family.  And with family, we will be spending time together, eating, laughing, and talking.  Most of us will have turkey, and pumpkin pie.  But how many of us will go out for a run or a walk?  Well, you don’t have to wonder anymore.  The 15th Annual Turkey Day run is coming up this Thursday, on Thanksgiving.   Apple cider, pumpkin pie, and we all gather to run/walk a 5k.  Then we all go home to have our turkey, and spend the rest of the day with our family.

Registration can still be from 8-9:45, with the race starting at 10AM.  It will be held at Great Plains Lutheran High school.  Come out and earn your food for the day.  Come out and exercise with hundreds of other people, and then go “stuff” our face for the rest of the day without feeling guilty.  Come join the fun.  It is a great family affair as well.  Keep moving everybody!

Brown Clinic–“Pretty in Pink”

KXLG radio station had a contest with judging here this AM, with the theme “Pretty in Pink”.  We at Brown Clinic went all out for this!  All of us wore our pink shirts, and decorated the clinic with Pink, and promoting awareness of Breast Cancer, and mammogram screening with our #D technology.  Here are a few pictures from today!  Win or lose the contest, we at Brown Clinic won regardless!  We show our support for good causes, and want everyone to be aware of what Breast Cancer can do to individuals, and their families.  We are all “Pretty in Pink”!

You Only Turn 50 Once…

You only turn 50 once, so you better make it count when that time comes.  I try to be health conscious and stay fit, but sometimes, you need to splurge a little.  When I came into work on Friday, my staff had the place decorated for my 50th birthday, and my nurse Chris made this cake for me.

cake 50th

About the only candy I will eat is peanut M & M’s, and she made this cake with it covered in them!  The top was a carrot cake, and the bottom was marble.  She did a great job.  This was the best cake! Here is a close-up view of it.

Did this cake have a lot of calories?  Yes.  Did it stop me from eating several pieces, including over the weekend.  Not on your life!  You need to enjoy these types of things in life when it comes along.  If you eat these type of things in moderation, then you can have them, and enjoy them without guilt.  If we restrict ourselves too much, then we end up crabby, and depressed.  I will make up for things with my diet after this, and I still exercise everyday so I can have these “good things” in life.  So can you!  It is OK to reward yourselves once in a while, but then get back on track, and take care of yourself.  For me, I just told myself “I only turn 50 once, so take advantage of it”.  That is truly what life is about.  Enjoy it!  Keep moving everybody!

Proud of You Nick!

Nick has been having a much better senior year since his first cross country meet this year where he collapsed 300 meters before the finish line.  Now, he is getting ready for the State Cross Country meet this coming Saturday.  He is starting to get back to his usual self.  Here is his last weekend with Molly and I at Tucks.  One proud sister here, and another proud sister Megan, back in college in Virginia, who wished she could have been home for this too.

Nick Tucks 1

He has overcome a lot these last few months, and as I posted last week, our first obstacle for all of us to overcome is OURSELVES!  We could not be more proud of you Nick.

Mom, Megan, Molly, and I are behind you all of the way.  Mom and I will be cheering at the course, and Molly and Megan cheering from afar, but we will keep them posted.  Go for broke in your final high school cross country meet.  Do your best, and leave no regrets behind.  This may be your last high school cross country meet, but your family will be cheering and supporting you forever.  We love you.  Families live together, support each, stay fit together!  Good luck, but have fun, and enjoy your last State meet!  Keep moving everybody!

Overcoming Our Biggest Obstacle…Ourselves!

There are many obstacles and adversities that an individual needs to overcome to exercise on a regular basis.  Our excuses all need to be in order:  It is too cold; too hot; too windy; too tired; too rainy; too busy; too etc etc.  Before too long we have to  realize that our true main obstacle is our mind!  If we can overcome our mind, our body will do what comes natural…MOVE!

Dr. George Sheehan, a famous runner and physician, stated:  “There will never be a day when we won’t need dedication, discipline, energy, and the feeling that we can change things for the better…What the day brings and every one learns sooner or later, is recurrent challenge…”  Time to face that challenge head on.  Here I am getting ready for the Goofy challenge this past January.  Nervous, and excited…and deep down, wondering “what am I doing?”.

Dan Disney 2

To get ready, we may be anxious, and it will become easier if, at least at the beginning, we anticipate this.  So, it is time to face that challenge head on.  It is time to do what we are truly capable of accomplishing,  and not settle for things that are easy and comfortable.  Get out of your comfort zone, and prove to yourself what you are capable of.  You will never know until you try!  Keep moving everybody!
