Well, with the wind picking up, and the temperature dropping, the leaves off the trees, the signs of Winter are approaching. Does it mean you have to stop exercising? NO! But it does mean you have to start making some accomodations, and being smarter about what you are going to do for exercise, and where. Right now, I just have to dress more appropriately, but I am still thrilled I don’t have to contend wtih snow yet. So, there are some good points afterall.

I will be the first to admit, it is not as motivating to go out when it is cold, and your usual routes/path are not as interesting to look at. So, start being creative. What are you going to do different as we approach this Winter season? Sitting on our butts is not a good choice. I think it may be time to once again have some posts about more appropriate clothing to be wearing, and how we can handle the cold better. Plus, as usual, just trying to keep us all motivated to keep moving. Enjoy the next few days. We are supposed to get us to the mid 50’s yet, so take advantage. Keep moving, and enjoy the weekend.

Consecutive Exercise Day #: 1505
Dr Dan,
The picture bings chilly running memories back to me prior to running in a Gortex Running Suit.
For years I would layer up in heavy clothing that would get wet and then I would get chilled. You recomended a Gortex suit and after springing for the suit I would never go back to the days in outside windy, rainy, snowy weather running or walking without being in a very light but warm windbreaking moisture wick away gortex suit.
Two weeks a go a lady asked me my thoughts on apperal since she like to run at 5:30 4 days per week but was not looking forward to winter. After she told me what she wore I suggested she consider a Gor tex and could order from Road Runner. She made the purchase ran the other morning in 25 mph winds 22 degrees and told me she could not believe the differnce, stayed warm, wind never penetrated and she was sweating and the suit wicked it away.
A light layer of underarmour and wigwam gortex hats and gortex mittens/gloves round it out
Personally I have run as cold as 20 below in this set and do not even give it a second thought-well maybe!!! Neverthe less you can run when it is cold and be comfortable.
Gotta run and long may you run.

I know the person you are referring too. I was just talking to her today. She was so fired up to be running outside, and says there is no comparison to how she feels when using the goretex. I too, have run in 20 below, I just have a hard time with the shoes bending very well. I would do short bursts, loops to stay close to the house. It just that when it gets that cold out, it really takes the enjoyment out of the exercise. I don’t know with me getting older if I am getting more “wimpy”, or “smart”. I keep telling myself it is the latter! Keep on moving!
