Portion control and awareness of “how much” you are eating is essential to weight management success. The label will always have the serving size listed on top. Take some time to look at the recommended serving sizes and the nutrient information for that serving. For example in 1 Tbsp of ranch dressing, there is about 130 calories. If you aren’t sure what a Tbsp is, you may be getting way more calories than you are aware of. Here are some quick tips for eyeballing serving sizes to get you started.
▪ 1 teaspoon (tsp)—about the size of a (pointer) fingertip
▪ 1 tablespoon (Tbsp)—about the size of your thumb or a tube of lipstick
▪ ¼ cup (C)—one large egg
▪ ½ C—1 handful
▪ 1 C—the size of a tennis ball or as much as a woman’s palm can hold
Tomorrow I will discuss a few more ways to eye ball serving sizes.

In between rain bursts, hopefully you have had time to enjoy the weekend, and Memorial Day. But remember what Memorial Day is really about…honoring those who died during military service. Don’t forget what they gave up for us.

If you have not gone to see the Veterans Memorial here in Watertown, go see it. It is very nice. Remember again what they did for us. It is located out at City Park, so go out for a walk along the paths here, and go see who from our area sacrificed for us.

Well, yesterdays weather was great…while it lasted. At least we had a good day then. We got lots of things done outside as well, plus our run in for the day. I went earlier, then went to work outside on the lawn, and trimming trees. I took these of Sarah out on the bike trail…

…it is so nice having access to the bike trail right just around the corner from our house. This way, we don’t have to worry about traffic. Now all we need is for the weather to stay good for more than one day in a row! For now, we take it as it comes.

It must be Spring Time. Outside working with the lawn and garden today, and we were met by a lot of “peeping/chirping” as a Mama duck and her ducklings were walking along the lawn, and in and out of the shrubs. All in a line, following each other. Spring must be here…

…while I was working on the lawn, Sarah was finishing up in the garden. All set now, just sit back and watch it grow! It was just a great day to spend outside. Later in the afternoon Molly wanted to go for a bike ride, so she and I rode around the lake for a 15 mile ride. Fun day!

With Memorial Day just a few days away, you may be getting your grocery list ready for your holiday cooking and gatherings. Desserts on the grill are a great way to enjoy a tasty treat while getting more fruit into your diet. When grilling fruits such as peaches, plums, nectarines, pineapples, pears, apples, and bananas, the heat carmelizes with the sugars and brings out the juices resulting in a very tasty flavor. Try marinating your fruit with honey, lemon juice, or nutmeg before grilling. Enjoy!
